In 1935, the United States railroad industry was in a period of transition, having experienced a boom in railroad construction in the preceding decades.
During the 1920s, thousands of kilometers of new railways were built, largely driven by increased demand for freight and passenger transport. However, this boom came to an end with the Great Depression of the 1930s, which caused a significant decline in the demand for transportation and a reduction in revenues for railroad companies.
As a result, many railway companies found themselves in a precarious financial situation and were struggling to stay afloat. Some railway companies had to declare bankruptcy or merge with other companies to survive.
