did you know In 1940 you could travel by train from Santiago to Puerto Montt in just 14 hours , a record for the first half of the century! They left from Mapocho Station at least three times a week.

The history of the railway in Chile dates back to July 1851 , when the first section of the 41-kilometer railway was inaugurated, between the city of Caldera and Monte Amargo.

"La Copiapó" was the first locomotive to run on national roads. This was a great moment for William Wheelwright , the indefatigable North American engineer, forerunner of the Compañía del Camino Ferro-Carril de Copiapó , construction company of the first national railway and the third in South America.

The train in Chile has been used for a long time, the State Railway Company itself is the oldest state company in the country with more than 130 years.

Our country still has more than 5,000 km. of railways , mostly for cargo transportation. In its best moments it came to have more than 8,500 km. and linked to the north the cities of Arica with La Paz and from Pisagua to Puerto Montt, added to numerous intermediate horizontal sections called "ramales" or "subramales".

Today, we can see a minimal part of railway lines in use, of which very few are for passenger transport.
